Understanding Sciatica

The age group of 30 to 50 seems to be more affected with the sciatic nerve pain. Sciatic nerve pain is known to usually occurs with acute pain or intense pain. It hardly happens that sciatica nerve gets damaged completely or permanently. Inflammation is one of the common symptoms which occur but it disappears within a month or couple of weeks. There is no chance of paralysis as the spinal column in the human body does not reach the lower spine. There are two serious symptoms such as dysfunction of bowel or bladder and gradually weakness of the human leg. In these two symptoms person need quick medical attention. It is also possible that person suffering from sciatic nerve pain also have cauda equina syndrome.
The non surgical methods of sciatic nerve pain treatment include the stretching as well as exercise of back. The person who is suffering from intense pain can apply ice or heat pack to the painful part for at least 20 minutes that will provide relief from the pain. In order to get rid of pain medicines are also available such as naproxen or COX-2 inhibitors and ibuprofen. For reducing inflammation oral steroids are also available. The alternate of medicine is massage therapy such as acupuncture as well as manual manipulation therapies by chiropractor or osteopathic physician.
